The existing house comprised of an inefficient layout with compact spaces, largely disconnected from each other. Despite a large, south facing garden, the internal rooms had little or no relationship to the outside world. A single window was the only connection between the existing dark kitchen and garden. Our brief was to create bright open spaces suitable for a growing family while allowing them to enjoy the large garden beyond.
Two new pitched roofs wrap around the existing building envelope. This economic solution includes a study, utility, WC and open plan Kitchen/Living/ Dining space and provides more generous bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. While functional spaces replace a seldom used garage at the side, a new family living space overflows into the garden via large sliding doors.
The rear façade plays with different layers and textures. Corrugated cast-in situ concrete and recessed render allow sunlight and shadow to create a plethora of different patterns and compositions as hours, days and months go by.

Night visualisation
Corrugated concrete piers catch the end of the evening sun, creating drama and depth on the two storey extension.
Model
The substantial new addition is designed to have minimal impact on the adjoining properties.
Exploded Axonometric
The roof profile of the new extension has been designed to be the most-straightforward and economical form possible, sympathetic the original house.
Model
The extended area is deeper than the original house and has a double ridged roof structure in order not to be higher than the original ridge height.
